As ADMAN has quite a few clients involved in B2B marketing I thought I would share 8 tips I have learnt on how to use Linkedin to market to potential business customers. I wouldn’t say I’m an expert so feel free to comment and share other tips…

Find new clients on Linkedin

1. Choose a linkedin lead

Like any social media channel, the more you put in the more you get out. Find someone in your team who is willing to lead on linkedin communication. Ideally this should be someone in the sales team.

2. Update your profile

Make sure the profile of whoever leads on linkedin for your company is up to date and includes links to your website, company linkedin page and all other social media channels. They should also make the most of endorsements so they are recognised as an expert in the field.

3. Create and update your company linkedin page.

This should be rich in content and ideally use the functionality that exists to try and data capture new leads.

4. Use the ‘People you may know’ section to connect with prospects

The ‘People you may know’ section allows you to connect with people with out knowing them. I would suggest you use this to connect with people who are likely clients for your business. In ADMAN’s case this is Brighton and Sussex business owners, marketing managers and marketing directors. The more relevant people you connect with the more relevant people come into this section. But be wary of this tool as you don’t want to be seen by linkedin as spamming people with invites.

5. Link in with all your existing clients and prospects

Ideally as soon as you make contact. Once this is complete this will be very useful as if you don’t have a great database you can use linkedin to analyse the profiles of clients by elements such as job titles, locations, industries, sex, etc.

6. Search and identify the key linkedin groups where your potential customers might be interacting on linkedin.

Monitor each group and provide helpful comments on items you are knowledgeable. Only self-promote (with a link to your website) if it seems appropriate – in our case it might be a response to someone looking for an advertising agency recommendation. Try to do this 2-3 times a week.

7. Post weekly updates

Mainly business related but a bit of fun too – but make sure its good.

8. Test linked premium to see if it can work for you.

Linkedin often sends free trial emails. The most useful aspect is inmail as it allows you to send targeted emails to prospects. Compile a target list of clients and then use search and inmail to talk to the most likely people responsible in that company (and then talk with them to confirm the likely decision makers if it’s not them and connect with them to).

Hope these tips are useful, please comment with your thoughts too….

Nick

What happens to ADMEN when they retire?

Like me, I’m sure you’ve heard of charities that support retirees from highly regarded public industries, such as Help for Heroes. But even though I work in the advertising industry I was surprised to hear there was an organisation for retired ADMEN, The National Advertising Benevolent Society.

This was brought to my attention by Mandi Stovell, who emailed me recently to tell me about the Peterhouse Sheltered Housing complex for ex advertising/media staff along the coast from Brighton, in Bexhill-0n-Sea, East Sussex.

In the interests of looking after my long-term future, and of course because its a brilliant initiative, I thought I’d ask Mandi to tell us a bit more:

Peterhouse was created by NABS, The National Advertising Benevolent Society, in 1966 as a place for ex advertising employees and their families to retire to the sea. Over the years, Peterhouse has been home to many memorable characters from the world of advertising media. Today, the flats have been skilfully modernised and refurbished to a very high standard, so that we can offer the current generation of advertising media ‘seniors’ the very best in independent retirement living. Those applying for a flat should be aged 55 or over.

Peterhouse Sheltered flats offer residents the wonderful opportunity of living on the sunny south coast. Residents enjoy the freedom of ‘having their own front door’ and benefit from superb communal amenities and, at the same time, have the reassurance of knowing that highly-trained staff are always on hand for help or advice.

“I am so pleased to be here and feel very fortunate”

Kate Lemarr, Peterhouse Resident.

We have 34 spacious, double and single flats and cottages, all of which look out on to some part of our delightful, award-winning gardens. They are let unfurnished, on an Assured Shorthold Tenancy (AST) and are regularly maintained. All flats are equipped with an emergency Lifeline Call System (similar to other warden-call systems, but manned by our own staff).

Some of our residents like to cook for themselves, while others prefer to take meals in our dining room where our excellent chefs and kitchen staff prepare delicious home-cooked meals. There is also a lounge with freshly brewed coffee and tea and a fully stocked bar. As you can see we know how to cater for the industry!

Brighton SEO – Key insights

Brighton SEO is a fantastic free search marketing conference created by Brighton SEO Company, Site Visibility. Though SEO is in the title, organiser Kelvin Newman admitted that he was striving to provide a bit of a wider marketing context for the September conference.

I thought I would share some key insights that I found useful. I hope you do too…

1. 90% of advertising isn’t noticed.

We probably all know this anyway but it doesn’t hurt to remind ourselves now and again. Guru Dave Trott also reminded us that a typical consumer will receive 1000 advertising messages a day. Advertising campaigns need to be different to stand out.

2. Simplicity is strength.

Another gem from Dave Trott. I think he said that it was Einstein who said if you can’t explain something to an 11 year old then you haven’t understood it. Advertising messages should be pitched in the same way.

3. Target opinion formers.

With advertisers like Directline spending £80 million a year what hope have you to reach your customers with your tiny budget. You can’t reach everyone so target opinion formers who are most likely to spread the word. They are more likely to be turned on by bold and risky advertising. Good examples of brands who have achieved this include Virgin and Naked wines.

4. Think mobile first.

For most industries today a significant portion of your customers are looking at you on their mobile or tablet. So 1. A mobile site is important but 2. Designing your mobile site is a great way to find out what is important for both your main site and your business.

5. Don’t chase Google Algorithms.

Google is getting smarter about penalising companies taking short cuts to get good search engine rankings. For sustained SEO performance it’s all about your content. Make your website truly great with content that people will share, and SEO performance should follow.

6. If you are considering creating an ecommerce site which can’t be personalised. Don’t bother. Amazon will out do you.

Google is also on the move.

7. 20 tips for becoming a good SEO.

Very helpful tips from Richard Baxter at SEO Gadget. Equally applicable for becoming successful in business.

1. Decide goals.
2. Get a mentor.
3. Ok isn’t good enough. If you don’t love it it’s not finished.
4. Learn how to pitch yourself.
5. Learn something new once a week.
6. Keep positive feedback in a special folder.
7. Don’t accept what you are doing now is the norm.
8. Be responsible for yourself. You should be aiming to make your boss redundant.
9. Rehearse everything.
10. Work is a stage.
11. Get out of your comfort zone.
12. Make yourself indispensable. What’s your specialism?
13. Build your own websites.
14. Learn to sell.
15. Care about the work you do.
16. Follow up.
17. Know your figures.
18. Leadership comes from certainty and certainty comes from confidence.
19. Don’t need your boss in meetings to answer questions. Don’t ask your boss questions. Find it out yourself.
20. Try to do things a little better every day.

If this has started you thinking about how you can improve your SEO or advertising campaigns please get in touch for a chat. ADMAN would love to help.

ADMAN is always on the lookout for new and exciting channels to reach consumers. So when I heard about Clean Advertising I wanted to find out more. In this guest blog Daniel Poynter from Standout Street Ads explains the concept.

Standout Street Ads provides a unique, environmentally friendly and smart marketing method which can be used to reach an audience of thousands on a daily basis, in an unconventional new way. We specialize in providing a low cost alternative to traditional advertising, known as Clean Advertising or Reverse Graffiti.

What is Clean Advertising?

Clean Advertising is a process involving a constructed stencil (in accordance to a client’s requirements), a high pressure jet washer and a dirty pavement. The stencil is positioned over numerous pavement slabs and a pressure washer cleans the cut out area of the stencil.

Example of a Stencil

When the stencil is removed the clean advertisement is left behind, contrasting sharply with the dirty surface. Simple but very effective at standing out on the street. It is a unique way of marketing which can boost awareness in an extremely cost effective manner. No chemicals are used, only the water we use to spray the dirty street surfaces.

Standout Street Ads Example

Who can use our service..?

Our form of advertising has been adopted by local authorities in the past to deliver public service messages. Whether it be home watch, litter prevention or a drink safe campaign around the town. The method can help promote local events, special offers, retail promotions or even just to increase an organisation’s market presence.

How long will your advertisement last..?

Once the campaign has finished and all stencil designs have been cleaned to requested pavement areas, the advertisement will usually last between 1-5 months.

Is it good value for money..?

In effect, outdoor advertising – one of the most effective forms of advertising these days – is really only available to large companies. Small to medium sized companies that make up 80-85% of our economic activity are not in the financial position to use this form of advertising. Clean street advertising is extremely effective and allows smaller companies to effectively place ads in a busy demographic for an affordable price.

Want to know more..?

You can contact Standout Street Ads directly or I would be happy to explore the opportunities on your behalf. Just let me know!

Infrared heating company Funkyheat launches in Brighton

Delighted to share the news that ADMAN has just launched a new website for smart heater company, Funkyheat.

Funkyheat’s innovate range of infrared heaters are at least twice efficient as other heating systems. They come in a range of styles included mirrored and design your own – where you can choose the image that goes on the front of your heater. ADMAN’s choice would be Hokusai’s ‘A big wave off Kanagawa’.

Coming soon to ADMAN’s lounge

The new website has actually been live for a few weeks in BETA but it’s now ready to share officially.

Funkyheat owner Simon Sharp has plans to go national (and even international) but he chose Brighton for the launch as it’s a green city rich with a dynamic population keen to try new products.

ADMAN developed the new branding and website, which includes a short infrared heater video hosted via youtube. We have also launched channels for Funkyheat on twitter, facebook, pinterest and linkedin. The first wave of the campaign is building a buzz around the brand via the website and social media. So far we’ve had a really good response, particulary from local media, fellow sustainable companies and Brighton architects and interior designers.

We are now on the look-out for gallery space and a venue for the launch party, so if anyone has any ideas please get in touch!

Ebay shop for Owen Pine and Oak Furniture

As we are in the middle of refurbing our 1930’s house I have been spending quite a bit of time browsing ebay for furniture that suits the period style of the house.

Whilst browsing I noticed that most savvy sellers on ebay have created their own shop. So when I was talking to client Jessie at Owen Pine and Oak recently I suggested she might want to give it a try.

Amongst their extensive range of pine and oak furniture, Owen Pine & Oak also stock a range of antique pine and oak items plus the odd bit of shabby chic. Jessie had tried select pieces on ebay and bizarrely often noticed a consequent sale of the item in their showroom, not actually on ebay.

So we decided to create the shop and see how it works. At this stage we want to test it so we went for the quick and simple option with no extra design or costs and the minimal fee for 30 day listings.

Sussex Oak Bedroom Wardrobe – now available on ebay!

You can see the Owen Pine & Oak ebay shop here for yourself. There are a few shabby chic options and the whole Sussex Oak bedroom range available. So far there have been quite a few views and, you guessed it, a related sale in the showroom.

I will try to keep you updated on progress!

If you would like to talk further about your own ebay shop please get in touch.

ADMAN is always on the look-out for new and interesting advertising media. In this guest advertising blog, Art from Old Bond London tells us about his cutting edge bike advertising company.

Old Bond London offer the world’s first spinning animated video ads on bicycle wheels.

Watch the video

We use an innovative advertising technology, the Video Pro, to transfer video-clips, images and animated logos from a computer onto the wheels of bikes. With such new technology transforming a bike into a work of art, the video-bikes are a true sensation on the streets mesmerizing people and attracting crowds.

Old Bond London runs advertising campaigns where customer’s ads can be displayed not only on the bike running on the chosen route, but also within stationary advertising performances in some popular places of a city. All the bikes are supplied with GPS, so a customer can receive the relevant report with a map of driver’s movements. The bicycles can be successfully used for businesses and various events, festivals and exhibitions, private parties and concerts.

Given Brighton’s ‘green city’ status, as well as being a compact city, I think Old Bond’s advertising bikes offer an original and high impact solution for a Brighton advertising campaign. If you are interested in discussing this further please contact Old Bond London or ADMAN.

Congratulations to new client Kraft Renewable Energy who has just opened their Solar Panel and Renewable Energy centre in Woodingdean, Brighton.

ADMAN is very busy with the marketing launch. Look out for the press advertorials and editorials in selected Brighton and Sussex magazines. See below for an example of an advertorial which recently ran in Southwater Life.

Kraft Renewable Energy Advertorial

We also have the Google Adwords campaign up and running which targets Brighton and Sussex residents who are searching using terms like Solar Installers Sussex, Sussex Solar, Insulation and Saving Energy.

ADMAN is working with Brighton ethical print and design company Littleseed to produce a DL leaflet which will explain why Brighton and Sussex residents should seriously consider how they can save energy and indeed make their own emission free energy using Solar panels.

The leaflet will be distributed to targeted households in Brighton and Sussex with an increased likelihood of installing solar. It also invites people to host their own Kraft Green Party, where they can find out how they can make and save energy whilst enjoying some of Sussex’s finest local wine and nibbles. If you are interested in hosting your own party please email Kevin at Kraft Renewable Energy now.

I’m very excited about Google’s Project Glass – which will hopefully launch virtual reality glasses to the world in the next few years.

Here’s the Google Goggles video so you can see them for yourself:

Google’s glasses will be controlled by voice or vision and will enable the wearer to do things such as make video calls and take pictures. One imagines the glasses will also give the user a rich documentation of their day to day life and experiences. They will also aid the user by displaying relevant and timely information in their vision. For example on a walk to the underground, if the tube isn’t working that day. The mind boggles with the potential and impact they could have on our lives.

Apparently the Goggles will be tested this summer and may even be available to buy by the end of year. I’m saving my pocket money already. Below is a picture of one of the draft designs of the Google glasses.

Google Goggles – How they might look
